As one of the most visible parts of the Sheriff’s Office, Enforcement Support Posse volunteers bring their own personal talents to the service of all the citizens of Maricopa County. We provide valuable assistance to virtually every division of the Sheriff’s Office; providing backup to deputies on dangerous calls, transporting prisoners to jail, providing traffic control at accident scenes and security at crime scenes just to name a few.
Application & Training Requirements
Application for membership is open to all residents of Maricopa County who are U.S. citizens, at least 18 years of age and are able to pass a background check conducted by MCSO. Applicants who have successfully completed the applications process then receive 40 hours of Basic Posse Training. This training includes:
Posse members who successfully complete the Basic Academy may then take additional training for specialized assignments if they choose.
Posse members, 21 years of age or older, who wish to carry a firearm and become a Qualified Armed Posseman (QAP) must successfully complete a psychological evaluation, consent to and pass drug testing and must undergo and successfully complete additional training including AZ POST firearms training.
Posse orientations are conducted at 6:00pm on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at the MCSO Training Center located at 2726 S. 35th Ave. in Phoenix. You’ll need a Sponsorship Form from the Enforcement Support Posse. To get a Posse Sponsorship form from ESP, please email recruiting@mcso-esp.org.
ESP posse members are required to commit a minimum of 16 hours per month to posse details, attend monthly meetings, pay annual dues of $25.00 and purchase a uniform after the completion of Basic Training and receipt of their MCSO Identification Card.
